The Menchville Monarchs could not maintain their great start in their game with the Bethel Bruins, and lost 28-6 in a Peninsula district game that was close until the final four minutes.
The Monarchs (1-2, 0-2), started the game with a 13-play 73-yard drive, with RB Franklin Isaacs scoring from 15-yards out to give Menchville a 6-0 lead early in the game. Menchville threatened to score again late in the second quarter when QB Rakeem Kersey appeared to reach the endzone with less than one minute remaining in the 2nd quarter. However, he was ruled down at the one, and on the next play, he was stopped on 4th down. \“It would have been a good momentum boost going into halftime\”, Coach Byron said \“but that doesn’t determine the game.\”
The Monarchs had trouble stopping Bethel running back Jontel Evans, who carried the ball 28 times for 227 yards and scored two touchdowns. The Bruins drove 82 yards on a 12 play, 4th quarter drive that put them ahead by two touchdowns. Michael Onwuku scooped-up a Menchville fumble at the Monarchs 37-yard line with four minutes remaining in the game and returned it for the games final points.
The Bruin (2-1, 1-1) defense, which came into the game ranked number one in the district, did not allow Menchville to score after their first possession. \“Bethel played really good defense.\” Menchville Coach John Byron said. \“They made the adjustments after our first drive."
Isaac led the Monarchs with 41 yards on 8 carries while QB Rakeem Kersey added 37 yards. The Monarchs will host the Kecoughtan Warriors next Saturday afternoon at Todd Stadium.
