Green Run and Menchville participated in a controlled scrimmage Friday afternoon at Menchville High School (Newport News). Each team alternated a series of 10 plays and then played one 12 minute quarter. Menchville took procession first and QB Rakeem Kersey connected with Antonio Harris for a 33 yard completion on the first play of the scrimmage. Kersey connected with Harris again for 15 yards and a face mask on the play put the ball at the Green Run 17 yard line. On the next play RB Franklin Isaac powered thru the right side of the line for a touchdown. The Green Run defense tightened up on the second series allowing only 16 total yards. Kersey connected with TE Nick Lenartz for a 10 yard gain but came up short on a pass play across the middle, on the series final play.

Green Run also scored on its first series. Senior QB Rhamel Glover accounted for 31 yards (2-3-17 passing, 14 rushing) to setup sophomore running back Tray Chapman, who sped through the middle of the field for a 45 yard touchdown run. Glover was also successful on the second series, completed 3-4 passes including a 61 yard touchdown pass to receiver Robert Hill.

Both teams failed to score on their next series. Menchville picked up 3 first downs but failed to reach the end zone. Four different running backs combined to run the ball 9 times for 53 yards. A sack and an offside penalty put Green Run in a 4th and 24 situation; but tailback Tray Chapman again broke several tackles for a 28 yard gain. Unfortunately, it was Green Runs last play of the series.

Menchville again used the run on its third series gaining 40 yards on 6 carries including a 9 yard touchdown run by tailback Donnell Whitehead. Backup QB Steve Crisp completed 3-3 passes for 30 yards on the drive. Green Runs last controlled series featured a lost fumble, and two 4 and outs.

After a short break the teams ran a simulated 4th quarter. Franklin Isaac scored on a 3 yard touchdown after a drive in which Green Run committed 2 personal foul penalties. Isaac gained 25 yards on 3 carries. Green Run gained only 9 yards on their first series of the quarter and Menchville took over on downs at the 29. Odis Wesby carried 4 times for 16 yards and finished the drive with a 3 yard touchdown burst thru the middle. The teams exchanged interceptions and the scrimmage ended when Green Run fumbled the ball in the Menchville end zone.

Menchville head coach John Byron was happy with the running game and impressed with the play of the defense. "Our guys took what they learned in practice and carried it out on the football field." Senior halfback Franklin Isaac said "We ran the ball well. If we continue to run the ball hard it will open up the pass." Menchville plays Woodrow Wilson at Todd Stadium on August 31 while Green Run opens its season against Bayside September 1st.
