The Monarchs led after the first quarter for the second straight week, but could not hold on to the lead in a 37-3 loss to the Heritage Hurricanes. The Monarchs were not able to follow-up their great performance last week when they almost upset perennial district power Phoebus.
The Monarchs failed to reach the end zone for the first time this year and had to settle for a 22-yard goal by David Haas after having a first-and-goal from the Heritage nine yard line.
Penalties and poor tackling also doomed the Monarch chances. Two potential touchdowns receptions were negated by penalties and the Hurricanes converted five third down opportunities that kept the ball away from the Monarch offense. The defense did not recover any of the six Hurricane fumbles.
The big plays the team had last week did not surface this week. Cornerback Antonio Harris did have a big interception of a Heritage pass at the Monarch 10-yard line to stop a Hurricane scoring opportunity.
The Monarchs hope to regroup next week and duplicate the homecoming success the Hurricanes had when the host the Woodside Wolverines in their homecoming game next Saturday.
