Menchville senior Odis Wesby is called Superman by his teammates and put on a show at homecoming that gave the Monarch’s a 32-28 win over the Gloucester Dukes. Wesby gained 133 yards and scored 3 touchdowns for Menchville who won their first district game this year. The offensive fireworks from both teams was unexpected. Gloucester entered the game averaging 12 ppg and Menchville had scored only 32 total points in six games.
A blocked punt at the 24-yard line setup Menchville's first score. After two carries by Clifton Richardson in the polecat formation, QB Marc Centeio sneaked in from one yard for a 6-0 lead. Gloucester answered on their second drive with Ray Harris toting the ball on every play that he finished with a 1-yard touchdown run. It took Harris 4:05 to cover the 54 yards. But Menchville scored again before the first half was done on a 3-yard slant pass touchdown from Centeio to Andre Simon with 30 seconds left in the first quarter. Gloucester took the lead 14-12 after QB Tommy Reamon Jr found TE Josh Lovell across the middle for a 27-yard touchdown pass. Richardson returned the ensuing kickoff 68-yards to give Menchville converted another red-zone opportunity when Wesby scored on an 8-yard touchdown to put Menchville ahead 18-14. Gloucester went back in front four minutes later when Harris scored his second touchdown on a 10-yard run. Later, facing a 4th-and-29 from their own two-yard line, Gloucester decided to kneel in the endzone for the safety that cut their lead to 21-20. A 20-yard run by Richardson, and a 23-yard touchdown run by Wesby ended an exciting see-saw first half with Menchville up 26-21. Neither team scored in the third quarter, perhaps exhausted from the first half explosion. After a great interception by Brandon Hodges, Wesby broke free for a 20-yard touchdown at the 8:01 mark of the fourth quarter to give Menchville a 32-21 lead. Reamon's second touchdown pass to Lovell, this time from 24-yards out, ended the scoring.
